Escuintla Guatemala
Due to COVID-19 this trip is postponed until the Guatemala travel ban has been lifted and circumstances allow for safe travel.
Building Guate
Building Guate is a non-profit organization founded by Oscar Palencia and his wife Pheobe. Oscar developed a relationship with the community living amidst the landfill in Escuintla, Guatemala. Since then Oscar has dedicated his life to providing them with a safe place to call home, food, medical care, and education. Through generous donations, Building Guate purchased a piece of property just outside the landfill. They call it The Land of Hope.
The Land of Hope houses 16 families; provides school for over 200 children; feeds over 500 meals weekly through their soup kitchen; provides formula to almost 100 mothers every week; and so much more. All of these resources are available to anyone in the community who needs them. The Land of Hope is simply that. And they require nothing in return. Part of their mission states: "We seek to serve the community by not only providing for their physical needs, but by addressing their spiritual, emotional, and relational needs. " |
What we are doing
Aquasol International is teaming up with Building Guate to build a sustainable food producing system. This system will utilize integrated aquaculture and tri-level food foresting. This will be an ever-giving garden of resources for The Land of Hope and provide a great diversity of nourishment for all who come.
The teams will stay in the beautiful city of Antigua. Each day will begin with a beautiful drive down the mountian to the Land of Hope. There the work will begin. We will prep the soil, plant hundreds of plants in a systematic food forest, install a recirculating aquaculture system, and stock with fish. After these construction trips, Aquasol plans to continue working with Building Guate to insure a well trained farm team and that their fish and plants are healthy and continue producing nutritious food for the community for years to come. |
